Are you pumping iron?
« on: February 04, 2009, 03:53:56 PM »
I have been lifting weights for quite some time, and must say that it has helped me gain lots of valuable self-understanding, as well as an astonishing physique  ;)

So what about you, are you doing anything to keep fit? Maybe you ditched the coke for good here at new years?

Let me hear all about it!

I've just started exercising properly recently, so far I've only done a couple of sessions so can't see any results but once I start to notice a change, I think that will motivate me. I think that having a better body just gives you more confidence, so even if the women you're aiming to attract aren't bothered about your body, the confidence that it gives you will attract them.

Just out of interest, what does your basic workout routine consist of?

At the moment, I am following Eric Cressey's "Maximum strength program", which is basically a 16 week program aimed at making me stronger. So far it's great, in only 4 sessions I have already made some gains.

What about you? Are you on a typical bodybuilding routine? If so, I would advice you to build some base strength first, and do the big exercises like the squat, deadlift, pull-ups, rows, bench press, overhead press, push-ups, inverted-rows, dips etc.

:)

I'll have to check that out.

Yeah, at the moment I'm just doing sets of basic muscle builders like bench press, pull down and others you mentioned. I'm just trying to build the muscles before doing anything to shape them. Do you go for the whole eating lots of small meals with protein every 2-3 hours or just regular meals?

Sounds good, Adam.

When training for strength, you also eat to get strong.

That means yes, lots of protein, but not insane amounts. I don't do any voodoo eating; remember eat to live - not live to eat.

Lots of fruits, veggies, meat, fish, you know, natural stuff!

If it has a labet with ingredients on it, it's probably not that natural. Keep that in mind.

Did some powertraining (benchpress, deadlift, ...) for 2 months, got kicked out of the gym and started doing Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu :-*.

I work out at home, got a treadmill, exercise bike, punchbag, few free weights and a mulitgym. Going to a gym can motivate you to work harder but I prefer doing it at home because you can look a dick and no one can see you basically!  ;D

I do the program P90X by Beach Body and it's pretty good. I've been on it for about five weeks now (including a one-week break). It's really intense, the workouts are just under an hour each, and you are going at it pretty much nonstop. I don't always have the time to dedicate to the workouts but I've noticed some results already. My shoulders are feeling more muscular, I'm able to lift at least a little more (weights and reps), and overall I just feel better. My biggest drawback is I can't really afford the food I need as part of the regime but I've been investing in some canned tuna since it contains a ton of protein at a pretty decent price.  :P

That's a problem I have, most of these plans talk about eating 6-7 small meals a day, loads of protein shakes etc and its just not practical in day to day life. The tuna is a good call though, it surprising just how little protein some other meats contain.

I've actually thought about investing in some Muscle Milk protein shake powder from GNC.com ... one serving of the stuff contains 32g of protein, plus the 9-11g in the milk you use. Combine that with a can of tuna and you have 65-70g of protein in one meal. A one-month supply costs around $80 though, not sure if I can really afford to make that investment with all my other bills I still need to pay.  :-\ Might be something to think about for you other guys looking to bulk up a bit.

Just focus on eating healthy and with lots of variety, and in general you will be fine.

Natural and unprocessed foods should be the staples of all diets; and if you cut down on tobacco and alcohol, you will have come a long way.

Just my two cents  ;)

I have been working out for just over 5 years now, but it can be an off-and-on thing for me...it seems that whenever I make some life improvements (job relationship, etc) I lose the motivation, but then when Im not in a happy place, going in the gym can be more of a refuge... for example, back in AFC days, I had it bad for a girl that worked at the gym, and let me tell you I have never before (or since) been in such great shape...I had 9.2% body fat

So right now, I'm trying to find some way of keeping consistently motivated, not complacent.

As far as regimen, I've been moving more towards isometrics, though not completely. My favorite new thing is 'the blurpee', which you can check out with the link:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=46VoSA-9Xd8

You will feel these...As mike did in the vid, you can start a 10-set and work down, or I've seen on the net one guy doing a 100 day challenge, adding 1 extra per day until he hits the century mark...a little hardcore but if you are up for it, feel free

It is a love/hate exercise...if you feel bored you can throw in variations as well (exp: a pushup wouldn't really break the flow of movement)

Yeah Matt, burpies are incredibly hard! I sometimes do 'em, just for the heck of it... I always end up with a whole workout in just a few minutes. Fantastic :)

Thanks for the video, it's funny!

We did these at my kickboxing class the other night, I didn't realise they were called burpees!

I actually found them pretty difficult though, I have the same problem with squat thrusts. I think it could be because I have long legs, its kinda hard to get them underneath me quickly, if you understand.

As for exercise, I'm finding it difficult at the moment to properly get into it. I'd love to be able to get a decent looking body for the summer, but I'm not really sure what I should be doing.

If any of you guys is pretty good on the whole muscle building thing, do you reckon you could give me some sort of a workout idea? There's so much confusing stuff on the internet.

As far as equipment, I've got a multigym with pec deck, bench press, pull down and leg raise. Also got a treadmill and exercise bike. Got a straight bar with plenty of weights and dumbells with plenty of weights, but no bench to do free weight bench presses with.

Any help you guys can give I'd appreciate, just pm, email me, whatever  :)
